turn into a long term relationship? Or is it doomed from the start? Even after you break up, is there a chance that they will realize they made a mistake?

Rebound relationships can work. But they are the exception - not the norm.

Most of it depends on how attached or detached the person was when they left the last relationship. It could also depend on how long the previous relationship lasted, how long it's been since then, the reasons for the split, and whether or not they were the one who initiated the split. Many other factors could play a part, too. There are just too many to name.

Everyone is different, and every situation is different. There isn't really a way for a third person to tell if it's going to work for you or not. You simply have to give it a try, and prepare for the worst, but expect the best.
