I have cockatiels and my male and female have been constantly breeding. I'm putting a nest box in today. Can you feel the eggs if you feel her tummy or is this dangerous to do? How soon after a successful breeding, will she lay eggs? And does the presence of a nest box make them breed more? They have been breeding like this for a couple of monthts now and she hasn't laid eggs but I haven't had a nest box in there. They are both around 2 yrs. old so I think they are both able to breed, right?

'Tiels are breedable after 12 months of age. They may be showing the signs of mating, but that doesn't mean you can expect eggs. After a successful breeding the egg will laid within 36 hours. You won't be able to feel it, and as the egg developes it is soft until right before it is to be laid. Typically a pair will produce 2-4 eggs total. If you remove them, they'll continue to lay during the season. With your pair being so young, it is doubtful they'll successfully hatch their eggs on the first try. Supplements are available to aid the nutrition of breeders, and are essential if the pair will be raising the chicks. It's common to remove the chicks at a couple of weeks old and finish the brooding by hand to make good pets. They will not breed successfully without a nest box, a large enough cage, a quiet space, or without proper diet.
