EF stands for ejection fraction. It represents the fractional amount of end-diastolic blood volume the left ventricle is able to eject during systole. It is calculated as the stroke-volume (blood ejected from the left ventricle during systole) divided by the end-diastolic volume.

It is useful as a measure of heart performance, since people with heart disease have lower ejection fractions, which may lead to residual accumulation of blood in the left ventricle, progressing to congestive heart failure
