I have a staph infection on my leg and have been on antibiotics for 2 days. The redness and most of the swelling has gone away but I can see where a blister type thing has developed. Should I pop it or wait for it to pop itself?

Staph Blisters

If it is a blister, ie, watery, NO, there is no productive result, and you will spread it.

If it is a boil, like a big zit, you can and this will remove a lot of the infection helping the antibiotics to work. I know it's ok to do this because I had this on MY leg, and my doc watched ME mash on mine in the office while she gave me pointers. I am a chicken and wouldn't let her mess with it. hahaha.

Clean the area very well, make a good size opening with a clean blade or pin, and squeeze on it carefully, pushing everything underneath toward the hole. You can also pull against the sides of the opening, tightening the skin so there is nowhere for the stuff to go except out.

You don't want to push DOWN on it, or spend a lot of time messing with it if nothing happens. What you end up doing is mashing the tissue underneath and the infection spreads around inside.

Catch any drainage asap, don't just let it run. If it is oozy or looks white clumpy, like pus from a zit, you aren't done but you may not get any more out...these are not marathon sessions, a couple minutes here and there and then leave it alone! Clean well with peroxide, and neosporin and bandage it well.

You eventually want to get the core which is more solid, and usually bright green and boogery looking. The other pus (which you make to fight, full of white blood cells) is being produced because of this boogery thing, the true infection and when it is removed, you can assume that with proper wound care it will start to heal. The core will leave a cavity that shouldn't fill again. It may scar but it will grow shut in time. Disinfect the hole by boiling it out with peroxide, then flush with warm water, then apply some neosporin to the hole, bandage. Clean it and bandage at least 2 times a day.

Make sure when you are cleaning up, to wash the surrounding tissues on your leg with good old soap and water...wash your hands medical style (as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday song while you scrub around vigorously), and use paper products for first aid instead of messing with towels or rags to launder. Then bag it all up, tie it off, and put in the trash immediately.

Yes, pop it. It will hurt, but YOU MUST GET ALL THE INFECTION OUT! Read the rest carefully. Email me if you have any questions.

OMG, I had staff (MRSA) and you need to be extremely careful. Once you pop it, wash your hands with alcohol. Then take Tea Tree Oil (get it at walmart in the vitamin section for only $5 or at CVS, Walgreens etc. for almost $10) and apply it full strenght three times daily at least. It will kill it. If you let it go, it can kill you. Only let a doctor put you on antibiotics as a last resort. I was on antibiotics for almost a year including IV antibiotics.

I finally got fed up and researched it myself and found that Tea tree oil is very effective against staph. But once you get staph, you will probably get it over and over again. So keep tea tree oil on hand and even if you are suspicious of a bump, just dose it on. Tea tree oil also works on acne and toe fungus and cold sores.

My doctor was impressed at the knowledge I gained. But it is painful if you go their way. Once I did it my way, I have not been to a doctor once since!

Here is a link.

I would go to your doctor. It is likely to have a staph infection. It is also important to have it cultured because there has been an emergence of a new staph known as CA-MRSA. Which is community acquired methicillin resistance staph aureus. This staph has to be treated differently, with either bactrim, clindamycin, or doxycycline. Also, since your dauther has a tendency of putting her hands in mouths you do not want to risk reinfecting her in case this is staph.

Right now my skin is perfectly clear, for the first time in 3 years. It's been about 9 weeks and all my acne is gone. It is such a great feeling to wake up with clear skin.

If you can possibly prevent it from popping leave it alone, the chance of a scar will be less.
