The 4L position doubles the engine speed for the same speed as 4H. This will double the torque available to the wheels. This position is not recommended for hard surfaces and for the most part only used for off-road. Read the owners manual to get a better idea.

4 low is a lower gear ratio.... you engine will rev higher but your vehicle will move slower with more torque at the rear wheels. 4 Low is used in extreme off roading or going slow in a blizzard. 4 High is good for regular off roading and regular snow.

Low gear (4low) gives you more power in the low range of the RPM band allowing you to get through tough turrain it also limits your speed (4High) gives you more power in the high range giving more speed while sacrificing low end power (although great for sand) it's the gearing in the Transfer case 4low and 4high that causes this it's what makes 4wheel drive great

4 hi is mostly for street driving(like snow and that type of thing). 4 lo is for more torque, like in mud or hill climbing.
