Jealousy is also a problem in dogs.

Hello,
Despite the fact that jealousy is a human emotion, many dog owners can attest to the fact that their dogs seem to exhibit jealousy related behaviours. Usually this occurs when a new person enters a dog's household and spends time with the dog's owner. Classic examples are new boyfriends or girlfriends and of course the arrival of a new baby. These new 'intruders' take away the precious alone time that the dog had with its owner(s) and subsequently they can feel neglected. These intruders are also invading what the dog feels is the family's territory.

Dogs that feel jealous can exhibit behaviours that were previously unseen by their owner. Depressive behaviours such as social withdrawal, inactivity and loss of appetite are common. Occasionally a jealous dog can exhibit previously unseen signs of aggression.

It is important to spend extra time with your dog during this period of transition. Give the dog some extra treats, extra petting and maybe some extra exercise.
ROUTINE is extremely important during these periods of transition. Walking, playing, and feeding your dog at the same time each day is a great stress reliever. If it is a boyfriend or girlfriend that is making your dog jealous then occasionally, under your supervision, have THEM give the dog a treat or play fetch. Include the dog in normal daily activities. If you're watching TV for example, call the dog over and pet the dog while the new person is around. Don't force the issue though, if the dog doesn't want to, let the dog be. He/she should come around eventually.

Hope this helps,
Sam

We've had our dog for 4 years and have just recently got another one from a rescue centre and to start with we couldnt even go near the new one without the old one running over and pushing the other one out of the way, or growling when we stroked him and it's all just jelousy.

Dogs see the family as their pack and when another dog is in their teritory they get very defensive, and as you are usually the leader of the pack any attention you give the other dog indicates to the dog that you favour the other one.

They usually get jealous and want your attention. Try to socialize your dog as much as possible and maybe go to the dog park to interact with other dogs. I have never had this problem with my jack russell pup but in my training class there is a rat terrier. It does not like when its owner goes near any other dogs, it gets very defensive. The woman can't even come over and pet my dog without her puppy reacting.

Dogs are a pack animal and as you are the dominant/top "dog" in your pack to your dog when you are playing with another dog it is asserting it self to let the dog know that though you are the "top dog" he/she is second dog in the pack and there is no way that he/she is letting another dog take his/her place.

You can stop this behaviour by asserting your place in the pack and reminding your dog that you are top dog and that behaviour will not be tolerated. A lowering of the voice towards a harsh growl as you say no should do the trick but remember to not ignore your dog completely when you are playing with another dog.....include them

Jealousy, my yellow Lab is the friendliest dog alive but not when I play with another dog or animal. He will throw tantrums like a spoiled child. He actually does not like me playing or giving attention to humans either. But as soon as my attention is focused on him he is fine and happy as can be.

Some dogs can be jealous. Always play with both of them equally and give both equal attention during play time.

the dog thinks that you are his biatch, then you go and play with another dog, your dog feels hurt, neglected, and used, ... poor thing...what the hell? do you do this to piss him off? bring another dog in your yard and play with it right in front of it? na im joking.. i dunno..i think dogs just like attention...when i pat my cats and the backdoor is open sometimes my dog is standing at the door giving me an evil look..so i dunno..Jealousy definatly..think of if your girlfriend/boyfriend was stroking and playing with someone else..or you could smell someone else on them..i guess ud be jealous too..
