I had that problem with tattoos. After I got the first one I couldn't wait to get another. Now I have 5 (3 very big) and wish I never did.

I think that it is just like any other addiction. They get a sense of well-being when they are getting a new piercing. Some others might be using the piercing to feel a void that they may have in their lives. It could also be because some people like the pain of piercings for what ever reason. There are many reasons. Many people get addicted to different things and everyone is addicted to something, whether it be drugs or TV.

Having only the tiniest glimpse into this world, I think the answer lies somewhere between the power felt in overcoming such outrageous - at least in my case - pain and, perhaps, a little bit of a secret sado / mascochistic fetish.

The experience of my pain during the piercing was so intense it quite litterally felt like a drug...like estacy. I was beside myself in the feeling of absolute pain that it didn't hurt anymore because my body was wrapped up trying to understand all the different sensations at the same time.

Every pore in my body started in a cold-sweat, washes of endorphines in the brain try to counter the intense pain so that it will keep functioning and not pass out, a flight-or-fight command is issued and adrenaline starts pumping through your veins, every one of your senses is then heightened as you body attempts to anticipate the next attack...

And then you start to come back to your senses and realize you have to do it all over again to make an even pair... which inspires just a little bit of terror - which is where the Power over the pain comes in and you chose to go through it again, a second time.

People are a curious bunch. Piercings, tattoos, etc. Some people will do things just to tick someone else off. They do it be part of the "crowd". The do it just to be different. Some actually think is "cool". Actually piercings annoy most people, so that probably is the main reason for doing it.

Well I have about 16 piercings...all on my ears and face and I don't think it's an addiction. I like the way they look. I don't get a "rush" out of pain...Piercings and tattoos are body art and a way to ornamentate yourself. It doesn't necessarily need to be an addiction just because you like having them...

Pain gives the body an endorphin rush and feels good. They don't know how to get their endorphins raised any other way. It's the same with cutters - the pain releases endorphins, which produces both a numbing feeling and a self-esteem rush.
