My vet wouldn't give me a straight answer. My dog got attacked by three other dogs and has about a 2 inch gash on his hip and I can't get him to the vet until my husband gets home. Right now he's sleeping comfortably in my room on his bed, I just hope he's ok.

It depends on a lot of things. First depending on how old the wound is they may not be able to sew it up. If it has been too long they will leave it open so that way the infection doesnt get sewed into the body and cause more problems. Second if they can sew it up it depends on the dogs weight. The heavier they are the more anesthesia they will need thus the price will be more. Third it depends on how long the gash is. Most vets charge depending on the size of the laceration (like if it is a 1 inch gash they charge less than a 6 inch gash). Also depending where the laceration is they may send home an ecollar so the dog cant get at it. I would take him in as soon as possible the longer you wait the more infection gets in the wound and the longer it will take to heal and it might not heal properly. Also are the dogs that attack vaccinated? I would make sure because you dont want the possiblity of your dog getting rabies. Hopefully if yours is vaccinated it will be ok. Good luck and I hope your dog is ok.

My dobie cut herself on some glass while we were out running through the woods. She got 3 stitches at the vet and it cost almost $200. That included 3 bandage changes over the course of the next 2 weeks plus stitch removal later. Her gash was maybe only an inch long though. I don't know if they will charge you too much more since it is only slightly bigger.

the vet probably can't tell until they see the injury. is there any way you could get him to the vet now? maybe call a cab (ask if they transport animals first of course)? i know if a certain amount of time passes a wound will no longer be able to be stitched up. so that could cause problems. you could also call around to different vets to see if they will give you an answer so you can estimate what your vet will charge.

It will vary. First he will probably need to be sedated, very few dogs will let a vet give them stitches and they don't like getting bit themselves (the vet). He may need some antibiotics to prevent infection, and don't forget the charge for the office visit. That's why they don't like to give an estimate.
