By cultivating understanding of the true nature of everything around you, which is that all things arise due to causes and conditions (includes concepts and thoughts), are changing and impermanent and NOTHING inherently makes anybody happy, ever... not really. Once you can wrap your mind around that and keep it in mind, the next time you look at a commercial for something someone's telling you you JUST HAVE to have... you laugh uproariously. Getting stuff just to get stuff falls by the wayside by default.

I don't know how to achieve that fully.
I wouldn't need a roof over my head if I lived in Tahiti.
I wouldn't need a car if everything I needed was within walking distance.
All I can do is get only that which I must have to survive.
An occasional luxury such as an ice cream cone is good for the soul, though.
