My friend got a piece of graphite lodged into her ankle. Her dad's being a jerk and won't let her go to the emergancy room. I don't want her to get infected and die.
So what do I do?

Don't go to the emergency room. Go to a clinic or urgent care center. They are less expensive. Or dermatologist.

You should flush the wound with diluted betadine if you haven't already done something similar. The area around the punctures should be shaved so you can monitor for signs of infection easier, and generally keep the area cleaner. You should also keep the area wrapped in fresh bandages, they should be changed out at least once a day so you can monitor the healing process, if the animal is staying in its usual pen or outdoors you may need to make this more frequent depending on how filthy they get. I would also advise contacting your veterinarian and getting the animal on a course of antibiotics since its a bite wound. As an addition precaution I would advise separating the lamb from the rest of the group while it recovers unless it is still nursing, in which case you should only do so if it becomes a problem. Best of luck.

If there is still graphite in the wound, it is a dirty wound. Dirty wounds don't heal well and can get infected. Soak the wound in clean soapy water to try to get the graphite out. Don't go poking around in the wound as you can hurt your friend.

If the wound won't heal or gets infected, medical attention really becomes a must. I prefer to get any "foreign body" out of an open wound before that wound closes or it becomes difficult to do so.

Take Care.

You treat it like any other puncture wound. You have to clean it and i dont know if the piece of graphite is still in her ankle but if so then of course that has to be removed. The most effective treatment would be antiseptic so that it wouldnt get infected and keeping the wound bandaged. Dont worry i dont think that your friend is going to die.

Hi Cara,

HOME CARE ADVICE FOR PUNCTURE WOUND
1. Cleansing: Wash with soap and warm water for 15 minutes. For any dirt or debris, scrub the wound surface back and forth with a wash cloth to remove it. If the wound re-bleeds a little, that may help remove germs.

2. Trimming: Cut off any flaps of loose skin that seal the wound and interfere with drainage or removing debris. Use a fine scissors, after cleaning them with rubbing alcohol.

3. Antibiotic Ointment: Apply an antibiotic ointment and a Band-Aid to reduce the risk of infection. Re-soak the area and re-apply an antibiotic ointment every 12 hours for 2 days.

4. Pain Medicine: Give acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) or ibuprofen for any pain.

5. Expected Course: Puncture wounds seal over in 1 to 2 hours. Pain should resolve within 2 days.

6. Call Your Doctor If:

Dirt in the wound persists after 15 minutes of scrubbing.

Pain becomes severe.

It begins to look infected (redness, red streaks, tenderness, pus, fever).

Your child becomes worse or develops any of the "Call Your Doctor" symptoms.

If it doesn't hurt, you can leave it alone. I had that happen when I was in grade school and it took it about 30 years but it did gradually get reabsorbed by my body. If it hurts, go to dr. without your parents and explain situation to him/her.

I know a guy with graphite still in his arm. She will be okay, if not her body will reject it on its own.

Treat it as a splinter. No, she will not die, and her dad is not being a jerk.

Flush with peroxide and put neosporin on it. It'll fall off tomorrow. Hahaha
Just kidding...she's not going to get sick and die.
