I wouldn't suggest using yarn as yarn can rip or tear in the travel/handling process.
I bough myself bright green luggage straps that fit around the width of the suitcase. I put my name on them with permanent marker. When my bags come through the luggage carousal I can spot them immediately.
You can buy luggage straps in bright colors such as hot pink, bright green, bright orange, and florescent yellow at any luggage store, as well as places such as Target, Kmart, and Walmart in the luggage section. They usually cost about $3-5 dollars, but are worth it and they last. I've had mine for almost 5 years now, and I travel the world frequently.

There are a variety of different colored luggage straps that you can purchase and some even with TSA accepted locks. There are also multiple colors of TSA accepted luggage locks. A luggage tag that has a different design or color can also make your luggage stand out - check out the Flashtags luggage tags on the site below.

I went to wall mart and bought a luggage strap. It is multicolored and wraps around the luggage, it is not permanent so it can be changed or removed. It also doubles as a safety strap that helps to keep the luggage closed. I have a horror of waiting in the line to get my luggage and watching my underwear go round on the carousel. (I saw it happen to someone else one time) They also have large colorful name tags to put on your luggage. You can also tie a colorful ribbon to the handle.

Try large florescent colored luggage tags. Also consider a brightly colored luggage belt. These are easy to find, (including at Wal Mart) inexpensive, and really catch the eye on the baggage carousel.

Spray paint!! Just joking. You could use different colored luggage straps. They keep your suitcases form exploding when the clumsy baggage handlers toss them around, and they make it easy to distinquish your bag from others. Or something cheaper would be to just tie a piece of colored ribbon around the handles. Patches would be cool too. Some advice though is, if you're traveling to other countries it might not be a good idea to have American flag patches or anything else that would lead someone to believe that its an American's suitcase.

Take a piece of bright fabric, like neon pink, green, yellow or a totally weird pattern of fabric and tie it tightly to the handle. It will be easy to recognize.
Helps me when I go on vacation.
Using colored tape will just leave nasty glue everywhere when it comes off.
