mashed potatoes would make a fine base for a stew (as long as there are no potatoes in the stew), no need for gravy since you have gravy in the stew. also, how about a nice green salad? that would help lighten the meal up a little, and give an extra healthy veggie serving to balance the starchy, higher fat mashed potatoes. or maybe some steamed green beans. and try a chardonnay or a sauvingnon blanc with your stew. both are full flavored whites that would stand up to a highly seasoned dish like stew. you could even get away with a light pinot noir or Merlot - relatively light red wines - since you are serving such a hearty dish in and of itself.

I think mashed potatoes would be good, for that matter it would probably be yummy to put some of the stew on the mashed potatoes.

Depends on what is in your stew. If it already contains veggies and potatoes then bread and perhaps a salad is all you need. If not then I would probably serve it with rice

A salad would be the best choice as a stew is supposed to be an all-encompassing meal. It does not require any side dishes. Start off with a salad and a nice bottle of white wine and you have got yourself a meal.
