Does it need to be done every few years or once and forget it? Also before applying sealer (assuming it needs to be done again) does the shower need to be let dry for a day or two? Thanks in advance!

Yes it is bet if the shower is dry & clean of any sop scum. You can go to home depot or lowes & for $15 they make a spray on aplicator can that leave no residue to clean off, but only covera abotu 150 linear feet. So dependign on your size tile you may have a lot of sealer to buy that way. THough just buy the 1/2 tgallon conatinaer for abotu $20 -30 a sponge & wipe it on 30 minutes of your time & it will be done.

Most grouts that you pick up now a days already have a sealer premixed in the formula, todays grouts you don't have to do it that is seal it. The sealer you buy just gives your grout that added extra protection. Of which may be advisable. When applying your sealer, yes the walls have to be dry. Now when do you have to reapply is another question. Most sealers I have used leave a shiny finish to the joints I would say re-apply if the finish becomes dull that would mean it is starting to wear.,
