Parents often only want what's best for their children, they want to make sure that their kids have a better life, most comfortable life, than they did. That's probably part of why he's fussing over your choices.

But in the end, you are an adult and it's your choice to make. There is a lot of value and respect for members of service professions, and a lot of good work to be done in both fields you list. Your father is being a bit stubborn not to realize that. Yes, the money isn't the best... but if it's a job you love, it's a job you love.

He needs to see you as an adult who can make your own choices, and know that he needs to respect your decisions even if he disagrees.

I am a firefighter/ paramedic from Ohio. I have been in this career for over 15 yrs and still love it to this day. I have spend my career with some of the most talented and dedicated people you would ever want to meet. I am very proud of what I do and hope my son will some day follow in my footsteps. As far as the pay goes, fulltime firefighters in large cities make a very comfortable living, good benefits and a generous pension. "Get into a career you love, and youll never have to work a day in your life".

What!???!! I think you are doing a WONDERFUL thing, the question is, does that make you happy? Do you love what your doing? If so, it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks..now if he has to pay your bills, then you might want to get a part time, but if not, and you are holding your own, then GOOD for you...and NO WAY are you throwing your life away, you are doing good and helping others, i honor ppl like you.!!

Your dad will have to learn to live with your choices. I admire your decision for your line of work. Your dad is probably fearful for the dangers you face. Life isn't about money for everyone; your dad needs to accept that fact. Give him some time; when he sees how happy, and well-adjusted you are, he'll come around.

you have to make your own decisions in life and if you like what you are doing and it pays the bill that is all that should matter. When i told my mom that i was going to be an auto body technician i thought she was going to hit me. she told me that i need to get a real job one that women did and to get my head out of the ski. i love my job its hard work and i have to compete with men all the time but its what i like and it makes me happy. I have money to pay the bills and have some left over to support my vintage car habit lol

So what? Part of being an adult is making your own career choices so just tell him thanks but Its my choice. Pay is not the only factor. You need to do something that makes you happy. I understand the draw to do what you do...I used to be an EMT. Its very exciting and fulfilling. Just tell him to get over it!

Your career is your choice...and it is a very good one. Ask him, if he chooses something else for you to do, if you should help him when he collapses with a medical emergency or just go back to work at the job he chose for you.

Tell your dad it's a good thing that he didn't go into your line of career. it's your life, and you get to live it however you want. Let him be mad; he'll just have to put on his big boy pants and get over it.
