I have long hair, and yes it is possible for some people to grow hair to their knees (Crystal Gayle).
The maximum possible length of your hair is dependent on how long your hair follicles on your head stay active and growing, just like you normally don't have hair on your arms that is several inches. I have not cut my hair other than maintance trims, but it is length maxed half-way down my back. Both my husband and daughter's hair is at their waists.
We maintain the long hair with trims for split ends, using conditioners on just the ends, shampoo on just the scalp, it really is not that hard.

Hair, on average, grows up to 1/2 inch per month, and there aren't many things a person can do to increase that number. However, there are things you can do to ensure steady hair growth. Frequent trimming is the most important. Get the ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks to avoid getting split ends, which can halt hair growth. Nutrition is also important. A lack of nutrients can slow down hair growth. Taking a multi-vitamin supplement may help your hair grow faster. Adequate sleep helps as well, since sleep helps regulate hormone levels.

It is possible but it takes a long, long time. My Aunt has hair that is past her knees and it takes a tremendous amount of time to care for it correctly like combing instead of brushing. Not to mention if she puts it up in a bun on top of her head she gets headaches.

Yes, you can grow your hair to your knees, but you need to keep it very well maintained. It's imperative to have it trimmed every six weeks because split ends, etc. will cause it to break. You need to keep it well conditioned and brushed.
