I had a root canal on one of my molars about 3 weeks ago. The tooth in front of it was hurting after I got my permanent crown put on. I had to get fillings on my left side last week and asked my dentist what was up with my crown. Turns out it had shifted. She took it off & put a temp crown on. Now the tooth in front of the molar with the temp crown is in HORRIBLE pain. I can't sleep. If I lay down, it hurts horribly. I went yesterday and she was only gonna send me home, telling me to take Motrin. I got upset because of lack of sleep, so she gave me hydrocodone (which doesn't help) and a mouth guard, for my clenching in my sleep.

I haven't slept in 3 days. I don't know what to do. Is there anything I can put on the tooth, at least long enough to let me get some sleep? Should I go to another dentist? She took an x-ray and didn't see anything wrong with the tooth (that's also what happened with the tooth that got the root canal, the endodontist determined it needed a rc).

Yeah, a trip to the dentist would be one of the first things I would do - they should be able to help you with the pain. Other than that, Orajel and novacaine would help.

First of all tooth pain is very serious when it involves a molar or a tooth near by. Plus all that action in your mouth and the air getting into the pockets can cause serious pain. Your Dentist need to take your concerns serious and stop with the quick fixes.

One, go for a second opinion, other doctors and dentists like to fix someone else's work especially if it's a easy fix.

Two you could have a air pocket in your gums near the site that is very common in root canals.

Three and most important is infection. a round of antibiotics can help with what Motrin cannot.

Two and Three cannot be effective without the first. Go for that second opinion or make your dentist give you a X-ray to diagnose the problem.

That's crazy that hydrocodone isn't working for you-and she was going to send you home with NOTHING! I would definitely think about seeing another dentist. In the mean time, if you can stand it, swish with some Jack Daniels. Atleast try and hold it in your mouth for a few minutes. It does numb it-maybe that along with a hydrocodone will put you to sleep. Gosh, good luck, I have been there! :)

first of all, don't put anything ON the tooth. That never works. How much motrin did she put you on? You can take up to 800mg three times per day. Always take them with a meal and always eat half the meal, take the motrin, then eat the other half. (If she put you on 200mg you can take four of those in the middle of each meal ; if she put you on 400mg, you can take two of those in the middle of each meal). Truely, I believe you should get a second opinion. Your dentist does not seem to be addressing your problems!
