For a car/motorbike:
Built up area: 30mph
Single carriageway: 60mph
Dual carriageway: 70mph
Motorway: 70mph

I suggest reading the highway code: http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/

ANF is right about the street lamps and 30 mph thing. Unless specified otherwise this will be the speed limit in this sort of area.

As to the slightly scary variation in answers where national speed limits are concerned: unless specified otherwise, the national speed limit on a single carriageway road is 60mph and 70mph on a road with 2 or more carriageways.

Very varied answers to this, Normal built up areas with lamp post no more than 200yards apart it is 30mph. Except on urban dual carriageways where the limit could be 30,40,50, or 60mph.Local signs will sort this out. You just have to keep your eyes open for the speed changes.

60mph if you're out in the country, 30mph if you're driving through a town or village (or any other built up area)

70mph on the motorway

Due to how everything varies from place to place speed limits will be posted if they are different to these - watch for the red circles with a number, that's your limit in mph

If the road has street lights and no reminders then it is either 30 or 20. See the sign as or before you enter the road in question.
