I have only heard about citizens entering into the united states back from mexico, but what if i am a resident, do i still need a passport to travel outside of the usa?

Yes, with a few exceptions for a couple more years. You now need one to enter into Canada. A few Islands in the Caribbean can still be visited for the time being. Check here for details: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

You WILL need a passport if you leave the country by plane or boat, no matter where your destination is. Driving between the Canadian and Mexican borders does not require a passport this year BUT will require passports starting next year!! Even small children will need a passport!! Have fun on your trip! :)

You need one to enter into many major countries, and you also need one to get back in to the United States.

i have heard that pueto rico doesnt require american to have passport to enter
