The ones with open shells need to be thrown away, unless they close their shells when you touch them, then they are ok. After you cook them, their shells should open. If they do not, throw them away, they were dead before you cooked them.

Sometimes, clams that are alive will open their shells. Knock on the shell. If it closes, it is still alive and can be eaten. You do need to throw out any clams that don't open AFTER they are cooked. Enjoy!

Any that have open shells prior to cooking are not good. Any that have closed shells after cooking are not good.

No...do not use them unless the close again upon touching. Also do not eat any that do not open upon cooking

I've heard you're not supposed to. And I guess the reason would be because they're dead and collecting bacteria.
