She saw the face of Christ in the people she served in the slums of Calcutta. She gave these people dignity by bringing them to her clinics to die in grace instead of on the curbs of the streets. She gave herself to these people.
I am currently reading a great book, not necessarily about Mother Teresa, but about the slums of Calcutta, called City of Joy. However, I have studied the work and life of Mother Teresa and she is amazing. I have had a prayer of hers hanging in my kitchen for about 10 years, 2 years ago I received an answer to the prayer and went to Tanzania, E. Africa for the first time. I have since started a nonprofit here in Michigan (to help the poorest of the poor in a small area of Tanzania), taking a phrase of that prayer as my name, Through Our Hands. www.throughourhands.org

She was the face of the Sisters of Charity, an order of nuns that were big in the Indian subcontinent, although certainly not confined there. Mother Teresa, who was born in Albania, may actually have a mixed legacy. She was an arch-conservative on many issues, including contraception (which makes sense as she had no authority in the Vatican). A lot of people take issue with some of her views on contraception as well as her association with very wealthy people. On the other hand, Teresa of Calcutta was a great fundraiser for her charity and put a face on poverty. She may likely be canonized at some point. Vanity Fair had an article several years ago written by an unofficial devil's advocate about her darker side. Either way, she probably did more good than most people on Earth, certainly more than me!

It's so sad how most answers are simply stupid. Mother Teresa, was a person who had no other desire than to serve Jesus Christ by helping those most of us would never think of doing. She was utterly selfless and giving and being that she is dead, I think she'd deserve more respect. Yes, she was a catholic. Not all catholics are the same. Some of them actually do love God and aim to live their lives accordingly. Mother Teresa had a love and glow about her, because she was filled with the Holy Spirit. People who were around her sought that kind of peace and happiness and followed her example.

By vigorously opposing the use of contraception, she allowed many more of them to be born into poverty, making their lives that much worse. Alleviating poverty isn't much use if you keep adding to it at the same time.

MeatBot, I think we're two nations divided by a common language - it's amazing how different the meanings of the words liberal and conservative are either side of the Atlantic. Advocating additional expenditure on medical equipment makes you sound like a liberal!

By the UK definition, M Teresa was a conservative Catholic. There aren't many British liberals who would value the kinds of things she did, even if people feel obliged to approve of her because she was apparently so selfless (like most religious zealots, she was nothing of the kind). There are many ways to do good. She chose some of the worst.

She was so tight with money (even though she had plenty of it) that she refused to buy new needles for treating people. Old, dull needles had to be re-used repeatedly instead which caused a great deal of pain when inserted. She knew about it and still refused. Great woman...

Bad Liberal: You sound like a conservative. Bravo!
