To lose 1 pound, you must burn 3500 excess calories. The heavier a person is, the more calories they will burn.

125-174 lbs walking at 4.0 mph - 52 calories burned in 10 minutes
175-250 lbs walking at 4.0 mph - 72 calories burned in 10 minutes

you burn approximately 100 calories for every mile that you walk or run so to burn 3500 calories (amount of calories in a pound) you would have to walk/run 35 miles. But you will also be losing water weight and fluids which will come off more quickly than calories.

Also, the person who answered below is incorrect when he said it does not matter the distance - only intensity. Law of physics: calories (energy used) = mass X distance

Therefore, you will burn approximately the same amount of calories whether you walk or run X number of miles. You will have a different cardiovascular workout, but that is all and maybe work some different muscle groups.

It depends on a lot of variables-- how fast you walk, how heavy you are, how much you're sweating. But as a starting point, a 200 lb person who walks 2 miles a day will lose 1 pound in 3 weeks.

At about 100 calories to the mile, and about 3,500 calories to the pound, about 35 miles. Don't bother to thank me.

Something like 30-35 miles. I'm calculating based on marathon running, estimating 800 calories per hour, . 3-3:30 pace.

29 miles. To lose 1 lb of fat you need to use 3500 calories. Walking uses 30 cals a min. So you need to walk for 116.5 mins. Walking at 4 mph, which most people do, that's 29.167 miles.

Sad eh? Can't you tell I'm bored at work????

#edit#...sorry...talking rubbish.......7.73 miles.
