NOUN: 1. Any of a group of psychotic disorders usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations, and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional, behavioral, or intellectual disturbances. Schizophrenia is associated with dopamine imbalances in the brain and defects of the frontal lobe and is caused by genetic, other biological, and psychosocial factors.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. The person finds it difficult to tell the difference between real and imagined experiences, to think logically, to express feelings, or to behave appropriately.

Schizophrenia literally means "a split mind," and this may be where the misconception of split personality took root. Eugen Bleuler, a Swiss psychiatrist, first used the term in 1911 to describe patients whose thought processes seemed disconnected.

People with schizophrenia may hear internal voices not heard by others or may see things that are not really there. These experiences can seem threatening and can make them fearful and withdrawn. They also may have trouble organizing their thoughts and expressing themselves. Their speech and behavior can be so disorganized that they may seem frightening to others.

Schizophrenia is one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses. Contrary to popular belief, it does not involve a "Jekyll-and-Hyde" type of split personality. Instead, it means that all the attributes that go into the makeup of the human personality - logical thinking, feelings and expression, perception, and relating to others - become separated from one another.

Schizophrenia affects about one percent of the world's population and is found all over the world, in all ethnic and social groups.

People with schizophrenia often have difficulty functioning in society, at work, and in school. The illness can be taxing on both the individuals who are affected and on their families.

But the symptoms of schizophrenia vary widely from one person to another. In some people, the dissociated feelings caused by the illness are a constant part of life. In others, the symptoms will come and go.

People with schizophrenia do not always act abnormally. They may appear perfectly responsible and in control, even when experiencing hallucinations or delusions.

No cultural group is immune to schizophrenia, but the content of delusions varies in different parts of the world, according to one study. In Europe, people with schizophrenia were more likely to have delusions of poisoning or religious guilt, while in Japan the delusions most often were related to being slandered.

A person is at higher risk for developing schizophrenia if they:

Are a male between the ages of 15 and 24

Are a female between the ages of 25 and 34

Have a close relative with the illness

Had a medical problem surrounding their birth

Schizophrenia runs in some families. A person with an immediate family member who has schizophrenia has a 10 percent chance of developing it, and a 40 percent chance if the illness affects both parents or an identical twin.

What is schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disorder that has been recognized throughout recorded history. It affects about 1 percent of Americans.1

People with schizophrenia may hear voices other people don't hear or they may believe that others are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. These experiences are terrifying and can cause fearfulness, withdrawal, or extreme agitation. People with schizophrenia may not make sense when they talk, may sit for hours without moving or talking much, or may seem perfectly fine until they talk about what they are really thinking. Because many people with schizophrenia have difficulty holding a job or caring for themselves, the burden on their families and society is significant as well.

Available treatments can relieve many of the disorder's symptoms, but most people who have schizophrenia must cope with some residual symptoms as long as they live. Nevertheless, this is a time of hope for people with schizophrenia and their families. Many people with the disorder now lead rewarding and meaningful lives in their communities. Researchers are developing more effective medications and using new research tools to understand the causes of schizophrenia and to find ways to prevent and treat it

It is a mental disorder that shows itself usually in the twenties. The person has hallucinations and delusions that there are people around him that aren't there or something is happening that isn't happening.
There are many symptoms which present in many different ways depending on the case.
The resource I have found to be helpful is the book DSM-IV (or DSM-4) There is a wonderful section on this specific disease and many others. You can find this volume in any library in their research section.
Also here are acouple online resources also, if you wish.

It's a mental illness where the person loses sense of reality. Sometimes they just have spells, and some people are like that all the time. They might hear, see, or smell things that aren't there. Some of them get paranoid and think everyone is out to get them. And since this is in the Religion section, let me add, no, it is not demonic possession. I have a family member who is schizophrenic, and someone once suggested to me that maybe she's possessed by a demon. That is not what it is, and people who think that are idiots.

Schizophrenia is behaviourial science - where your sense of logical thinking gets overuled and you start believing in anything a person states unless you start asking questions and counter checking the answers maybe to yourself or with others.
Its a state of mind where you are yourself one minute and very upset the next.

Its one minute a person is ok the next second can go off in a tantrum, from what I have seen from it working in the health field you cant pedicate it and the person that has it cant help themselves I care for a person with it she loves me will go off on me the next minute apologize and the next can be just as agitated . They cant help themselves. They can be very loving and appreciative and just like that be nasty. Anyone with it needs your support. I will say when you calm down I will be back next thing I hear my name be called. I am not a doctor but from experience you always need to remember they cant help themselves and there is a good person in there and it does shine through and they know who to look for which is me
