An old wives' tale states that chewing gum, if swallowed, may take up to seven years to become fully digested, and that swallowing gum could also result in the substance becoming lodged in the esophagus. Chewing gum does resist complete digestion by the body; it is generally expelled like other foods in 95% of individuals, though relatively unchanged. Don't worry about it. If it stayed in your stomach it might actually take that long to actually digest because one of the main components is actually a form of rubber. Your body will take care of itself and get rid of it in the usual way.

I know people that swallow gum all the time, especially kids. Is it collected and waited for 7 years can you imagine what would happen if you had excess gas while passing it. The worlds largest mathane gas bubble.
