SONG is an imprinted behavior from the first few months of life. The making noise (chirps, peeps, possibly disjointed singing) is instinct.

If the bird never hears what it's supposed to sound like, it'll come out with nothing but noise.
How old is the bird? You're friend sure it's a male?
If it was taken away from older singing males too soon and has never been exposed to other singers it may never learn it's song.

Only male canary's sing, so if it never sings it's a female.

It's probably a female. Only males sing.

well have you had it for 5 days yet? if so maybe the little bird is scared and does not want to sing, especially if there is another pet in the house it may be keeping quiet so as not to bring attention to himself.
maybe also he is still to young to sing.

dont worry it will take time for your canary to feel comfortable in his new surroundings! i would put your canary near a window so he can hear other birds and he will eventually sing!
