Just be the center of attention when you get there. Some of the people down there do some SERIOUS body modification.

brazilian people(most of them) don't associate tatoos with gangs but i can tell you some people really don't like them and is hard to get a job if you have a big tattoo... if it's on a place you can hide when it's appropriate with clothes i think you'll not have any problems. Some girls love the tattooed men ...

Every (good) tattoo has a story behind it's creation. When done by hand, I think they are an art form of the highest quality. I love to look at body art and respect it's rather painful process. But, for me, I have had a lifelong desire not to permanently mark, scar or pierce my flesh. I do not mind mehndi henna designs. They fade away gracefully after a week or two. I have had many in my hippie days. My deepest instinct says no to permanent ink, so I respect my mind's request. I do not even have pierced ears. I would love to have some mehndi henna art done again tho. Just takes so long to sit still for it to be meticulously hand drawn, to dry and to set in.

I do not know their customs, but if you want one get it. It could all be over tomorrow and what others think is just that; does not change who you are. You can put a tattoo anywhere; I have one on my foot. So if you are worried about the drug or gang image, put it somewhere that is more intimate or private. Good luck on your travel to Brazil; you are very fornunate.

Actually its a totally different reason. In mexico tattoos are actually seen as demonic, you will get people crossing themselves and poking them telling you that you habve been touched by the devil regardless of whether you have a skull or a bunch of pink flowers (thought someone was joking about this stuff til i went there). Anywhere thats not touristy you probably won;t get a good reaction.

places full of tourists probably wont make any difference because the locals are used to them.

They kill people in Brazil for absolutely no reason - so don't give them any. Gangs are huge there.

Absolutely not. If you want a tatoo get one, then everybody will know that you were in prison.

That doesn't matter, if you want it, get it.
