whenever a religion spreads it absorbs bits of indiginous folklore, look at easter or christmas' dates.... worked a treat for the pagans. fasting is a part of lots of world religions, an easily achievable method of imposing suffering on yourself. maybe this is the earlyest one you have come across but its all the same. theyll be doing it in the scientology cult next.
