I don't think you should have many problems snapping pictures there as many would have you to believe. Here are a few tips though:
-1- keep your camera concealed as much as possible (if you find an interesting subject, take your camera out and take a picture quickly- with the person not looking directly at you- and then conceal it again)
-2-don't take pictures of women (i've managed to do it, but this is the one big no-no that could lead to some trouble)
-3-you can take pictures of ultra-orthodox men and women all over jerusalem as there are many of them throughout the city (furthermore, you can take pictures of them from busses, buildings, elevated vantage points, etc, that don't draw their attention to you, whereas Mea Shearim is usually so crowded and busy that you might not be able to pull this off)
-4-a lot of men in Mea Shearim don't like having their pictures taken, but won't necessarily give you a lot of crap about it either (it's mostly younger boys and young men who might get upset)
-the jewish religious clothing is probably very expensive (i don't know for sure, but i wouldn't be surprised if various articles of religious clothing were priced at over $200). also, i don't think anyone would sell them to you if you are not a religious jew.
just follow my tips and use common sense and you should be able to get a lot of interesting pictures in mea shearim.
and do remember, that whether you are a man or a woman, to dress modestly in jerusalem (esp., mea shearim) by covering your arms and legs. if you are a woman, it's probably most comfortable to wear a long dress.
happy and safe travels!

Hmm, without getting stoned? I'm not sure! lol, I'm kidding. Just walk into Mea Shearim and take the pics, some might start blabbering away at you in Hebrew or something but I don't think you have anything to worry about! They are quite a spectacle aren't they ;-) (If you do ask them for a photo, my guess is that they will not say yes) About the clothing...yeah, you could buy them at I'm sure any shop there and I don't think they'll be more than normal clothing seeing as it is their normal attire, lol! Have fun!

Well, they do not like be photographed without asking for permission. Just make sure you keep a low profile and not violate the shabbat in public areas. You should avoid exposing christian symbols. Keep in mind that the residents are anit-zionist.

i dont think anyone will notice if u just go in and take pictures... -im sure people do it all the time.
but the thing about dressing modestly is true- unfortunately, there are a few extremists that spray bleach at people that arent dressed up to their standards...!

It's dangerous to go to a military country. It's an army living in an area with a given name not like any other country in the world.
