It would probably be best to come here for a holiday first, say two to three weeks to get a feel of Bangkok and Thailand.
As for working here it is getting more difficult every employer requires at least a bachelor degree in a field related to your chosen line of work. They tend to hire Thais, for obvious reasons, they are the indigenous population and they come cheaper than foreigners. There is a minimum wage for Thais and foreign workers; for Thais it is 200 baht a day and for Europeans and Commonwealth citizens it is 50,000 baht a month for North Americans it is 60,000 baht/month. Even in Thailand this is not a great deal of money.
Think hard you don't want to be one of those people who come here fall on hard times and find it difficult to get back to the UK.
As for being locally employed by the British Embassy or any other embassy, because of thier special status they pay even less than the minimum wage. Typically the British Embassy pays a locally employed Brit less than 40,000baht/month.
Teaching is not an option if you do not have a B Ed and a degree in the speciality you are going to teach in.
Getting a TEFL certificate is one way but again language schools pay only by the hour or session and that is generally not much more than 300 baht.
So come here, see if you like it (it certainly isn't the paradise many people think) and then plan your strategy by talking to some expats who work here.

Sorry, there's no way you could get a gardner job or any other menial work here in Thailand. For one, you wouldn't get paid enough to get back home...haha! No really, the government has been cracking down on people coming in and taking jobs like maids, etc. They're making it harder to get a visa. Don't want to take away jobs from Thais. There are people who live here and work on the local economy, but you really have to network and know people. You can look at the british embassy and see if they are hiring, but they usually hire dependents first. Teaching is really the only realistic option. But you would need some kind of education to teach at a good school here in Bangkok. I've heard that schools in the countryside don't care if you have an education..as long as you are a native english speaker...but I would check this out further.
Why not just visit? Maybe you'd get here and decide you wouldn't want to live here.
Hope this helps...

You will have trouble. Unless you have a university degree of some kind, most regular jobs go to Thai nationals. Plus you need a job offer to get a work visa. Regular workers such as gardeners only get about 150Baht a day (about 3pound). Another option is to do a TEFL course which only takes a couple of months and you can apply for an English teaching job.

If you go to Bangkok there are a number of agencies there that can help you to find work and will also help with a working visa. Look in the local English Language newspaper...quite easy. A small tip. Book into a self-catering apartment for a few nights BEFORE ARIVAL (to get the cheapest prices) then look around locally - Thai people are very helpful and friendly. But like anywhere else DOUBLE CHECK on any information.

First, you need a Visa to live in Thailand. Then you need a work permit. If you have a specialized technical job that no Thai national can do you, you will get it. Otherwise, it will be difficult unless you work under the table doing menial jobs.

there is no chance of you getting a work permit.
only chance of getting any sort of job are in the english teaching or in resorts dive instructor fields.
there is also some black work in resorts trying to get people to attend sales meetings for timeshare etc, would not try that as you are generally regarded as scum of the earth by tourists and locals alike.
