I think I need a root canal even though the dentist said he couldn't see anything on the x-ray.

The thing is, I feel pressure and the other day pain. But I am afraid of dental procedures since I had one recently which was botched.

I want to get pregnant by next year. Should I consider having my root canal before then? I was wondering if being pregnant could cause general inflammation in my body and how that wouldn't be good to have it fixed while pregnant.

Basically, can I keep putting it off. I'd like to put it off until it gets infected, then mentally I won't care what happens.

Thanks.

There is absolutely no danger in having dental work done including root canals before or after pregnancy. I work for an endodontist and we do root canals on pregnant woman all the time. The only thing he advises is to not have any xrays taken within the first three months of pregnancy. After that its perfectly safe. We usually double shield as an extra precaution.

For the most part root canals are no different then a simple filling and more then 95% of people never have a problem afterward.

You really should get all dental work done before pregnancy, if possible. Pregnancy can increase dental pain. If it does get infected, they will have to wager which is more important- having a painful infection in your mouth and not risking your baby's life/health or fixing it with a root canal and possibly risking your child's health.

On a personal non-pregnancy related side, I'd strongly suggest getting it done asap. I had a problem with one tooth that kept getting infected and infected and infected. They didn't want to remove it while it was infected and once the pain went away, I put it off. Finally, after the 4th infection, I went on antibiotics for 10 days and got it pulled. The infection was very deep inside the tooth and even though I was truly numb, it still hurt. Don't let your tooth get infected. The infection can actually travel to your brain and you can die. It's not worth it with this type of technology we have available. Ask the dr for a sedative and get it fixed!

If you take care of things right away, you would be needing just a simple filling instead of a root canal procedure. It could take years for this tooth to decay to the point of infection and require urgent attention. For your own health and the health of your child, it is best for you to get all your medical and dental things taken care of before you try to get pregnant. I deal with a lot of women that neglected their health before pregnancy and suffer significant complications during pregnancy as a result.

Good god, don't EVER get a root canal whether you are pregnant or not! It is archaic and imperfect procedure that will leave you with sensation ranging from irritating to unbearable even years after the procedure. Also it hurts tons while actually doing the procedure. Go for an extraction, even more so if the tooth is in the back, and if you need to get a bridge.

I don't think that it would be advisable for you to get that done while you're still pregnant.

Anyhoo, call your dentist and tell them what you need to get done and that you'e pregnant. They would pencil you in for a slot after your due date and this will keep you from putting it off (:

Good luck and best wishes!
