I want to make sure she won't drown if she happens to fall off the boat. I think she weighs about 40 lbs. She is deep in the chest , but not real long in the body. She has long hair that could get tangled in straps, so I am concerned about that.

There are child life preservers that fit like a vest that might fit your dog. Another way is to have a couple of empty quart light plastic bottles with handles on them. Tighten the caps tight on the bottles to keep the air in and use a line or belt that would pass through the handles and secure it around the dogs upper torso. I saw this method used once by another dog owner.

What kind of dog is it. Depending on the breed, there really is no need for a preserver. Most breeds swim better without Personal Flotation Devices, but if you are that worried about it make sure it is fits correctly. Most of options give you the options for size by length and girth.

Your dog WILL NOT drown!!! She does not need a life preserver. Your dog knows how to swim better than you do. Just take your dog with you and have fun. If it makes you feel better, take your dog swimming first and you'll see she can swim.
