The article is correct about SB churches being independent of each other, as opposed to Roman Catholic churches which are part of a more rigid Catholic organization. Baptists do not purposefully shuffle around sex offenders in order to keep it quiet; sex offenders simply job hop on their own to avoid getting caught.

In other words, sex abusers shuffle themselves around, by simply applying for a new job at another church. Job hopping is also been a way of hiding embezzlement and other problems.

Probably (but please read on):

How society views and deals with child abusers has changed over the last two decades. Twenty years ago, when it was discovered that someone had a tendency toward this especially gruesome criminal behavior, part of protecting the victims from embarrassment was to try to deal with matters "internally."

Churches, youth organizations, schools and communities understood that these monsters were out there...creeping/slinking around in society and harming our children, but at that time, our cultural norms were to deal with the issue in such a way as to protect the children.

There were (and in some cases still are) stigmas attached to children who were abused. Many believed the child had some culpability--why didn't they stop it? Why didn't they tell someone? With enlightened thought and education, we know these are lies today--and our societal norms are to seek out and prosecute the offenders whenever and wherever they are found.

Back then, the norm was to try hard to quietly remove the offender without involving law enforcement or the courts (where the child victims might be placed in the spotlight in order to obtain justice).

To go back into history (Catholic Church, Baptist Church, Youth Organizations, Schools, etc.) and try to hold leaders accountable for not acting on TODAY's standards is not fair.

Let's stop child abuse today--let's find these monsters and use every amount of justice in our arsenal to stop them, incarcerate them and prevent them from hurting our kids. This is something we can do NOW to fix a problem.

Let's not worry about what we did before we knew what we know today.
