My boyfriend and I are looking for a dog when we move into our apartment. The problem is, he's allergic. Now there are many dogs that are mixed with hypoallergenic dogs such as, a Pomeranian/schnauzer, a beagle/shi-tzu, and a fox terrier/shi-tzu. Schnauzers and shi-tzus are hypoallergenic, so does that make the mix a hypoallergenic dog? (i know this question and the wording makes me sound like an idiot, just go with it)

No, you can't assume that. First, technically, no dog is hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that people are less allergic to. I don't, however, know offhand which breeds they are.

But breeding a dog on this list with a dog that isn't on this list will not guarantee that they "less allergenic" properties will transfer to the puppies. Imagine a specrum. At one end is one dog, which all of its temprament and physical characteristcs, and at the other end is the other dog. A puppy resulting from this mix can have a temprament and physical characteristics from anywhere in that spectrum.

So, if there is a pomeranian/schnauzer mix, the puppy could have the personality of a schnauzer and the physical traits of the pomeranian. Or vice versa. Or right in the middle. And the other puppies will not necessarily be the same.

Your best bet is to find a purebred dog that is less allergenic, or a mixed breed from two less allergenic dogs.

In reality no dog is 'hypoallergenic'. It isn't the fur that causes most allergies but the skin that we all shed all the time. Crossing non shedding breeds such as poodles with other breeds does not create an allergy free pet. What I suggest you do is write a list of all the breeds you like then find a breeder who will let your boyfriend interact with the dogs and see whether they cause a reaction. Breeds that seem to be better for people with allergies are poodles/bichons and the hairless breeds. It's better to put in a lot of effort now to find the right breed than make a mistake. Good Luck.
