Depends on the breed. Usually the larger the dog the shorter the life span - Great Danes/Irish Wolfhounds usually 6-9 years, Labs/Retrievers usually 10-12 years, terrier types around 14-16 years and poodles etc. around 16 - 20.
However, I met a 20 year old Irish Setter last weekend that had the energy of a pup. His face was solid grey and his coat had lost that really coppery red they have but boy he was gorgeous.

Generally speaking, the smaller the dog, the longer they live.
Assuming they are fed a healthy, low fat diet and that they get a decent amount of exercise, an average size dog (retrievers for example) will live about 12 years. Large dogs, like Great Danes, seldom live beyond 7 years. Little dogs often live 14-17 years

It just depends on the breed smaller dogs live longer than big dogs. Big dogs can live till there about 9 years maybe 10 smaller dogs can live 15 years old or more. I heard about a chihuahua that lived till it was 19 Years old!

Generally speaking, the larger the breed, the shorter the life span. On average, a Great Dane lives about 7 years while a Dachshund (wiener dog) lives to be about 17.

Depends totally on the breed.
Giant breeds like Great Danes are old at 7. Small terriers can live well into their teens.
Most medium sized breeds live to be 12 or so.

Dogs life spans depend on the breed and care they receive. We had a boxer that we bought as a puppy but sadly died at age 1 due to inheriting health issues from his parents. After he died I found out boxers life span is 8 yrs. old but that's if they are lucky and have the proper care they need. Our vet said she has seen a few boxers live longer but not many. Smaller dogs have longer life spans than larger dogs. (atleast that is what I was told from our vets office) Alot of it probably depends on if they get routine vet check ups & shots to keep them healthy.

For me, i think that when they are 10 years old, they are already beginning to be considered old but if it is well looked after, it should be able to live for 16 years or more.
