There is this guy that I met through writing letters. Well, I have grown to like him a lot. He says that he wants to build a relationship, but how do we date if we've never even met?

I should've said: I'm 18, he's 20. We've been e-mailing and sending pictures. We've been talking for a while. He doesn't have anyone here; she broke his heart.

There is nothing wrong with dateing a deployed slodier, you should definitley go for, its not everyday that a hero wants to date you

Tough one. But if you really want to be with him and he feels the same then continue to write each other and maybe even talk on the phone when he can call. When he gets a leave from the army arrange for the two of you to meet. And if you still have feelings for each other after actually spending real time with him then you know if you should be together with him and if not then just be honest with him and move on. It also depends on how much you like this guy. Is he worth the wait while in Iraq? Is he worth waiting for in general? If your heart tells you yes then go for it. Always follow your heart. Do that and you can't go wrong. Good luck!

You can't date if you've never met...when he returns to the states (assuming that's where you live) then the two of you can decide if you want to meet and go from there...
...until then, you're just penpals. There's WAY too much you cannot know about someone until you've met them. One or both of you may decide you aren't a good match at all if you meet...or you may decide you are a wonderful match...but ya gotta spend face-time to figure that out for sure.

boy, that's tricky. You could do it, but that's not a relationship for the faint in heart. Do you know when or if he's coming home any time soon? You all could meet somehow, and talk for real, see if you both still want to have a relationship. Good question!

Why do you have to date before he gets back? I think you should continue to build your relationship while he is there, and when he returns you will be able to see if you have chemistry. Obviously you guys have a kind of intellectual chemistry, and that is really important, but you might not like how he looks, smells, acts. Or you might absolutely love him. I think you should keep writing and see where it goes. He won't be in Iraq forever. And, definitely do not date him unless you are going to be true to that.

I think you have a great oppertunity to get to know him through writing letters. I think it is a good idea and you can make it work.
Just please, if you don't think you can be true to him while he is gone, tell him that you are going to date other ppl and there is a possiblity for a relationship when he gets back.

Wow! Nikki, that's harsh! There is no way to date. If he makes it back, then talk about dating. This way you can tell if he already has someone here or not. It gets very lonely over there and he just might need someone to talk to.

I agree with Navy_hobo. wait till he comes back. then get together for lunch or coffee or something. not really a date, but something where you could get to know him better than in the letters. after that, then you make your discision

continue your relationship as is until he comes home. Meet when he returns and decide what to do then. If you choose to be exclusive until then that is fine. If he is worth pursuing for a long term relationship he may be worth waiting for.
