In the US, a billion is a thousand million and a trillion is a thousand billion.

I have heard that the meaning is different in the UK, but I'd like to see someone from there describe it.

Traditionally a US trillion is 10^12 (12 noughts) and a UK trillion is 10^18 (18 noughts). General concensus now is that this is obsolete and we all use the US version.

Trillion may mean either of the two numbers:

1,000,000,000,000 (one million million; 1012) - increasingly common meaning in English language usage
1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (one million million million; 1018) - increasingly rare meaning in English language usage.
