Canaries were brought by Spanish monks from the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands (which the birds are named after) are set off the coast of western Africa, the archipelago consists of 7 islands and 6 islets, divided into two provinces. From the East, there is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with 3 islands - Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and the islets. At the west is Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

The Spanish monks, being shrewd businessmen were quick to see the potential in these birds and they soon became popular the world over as songbirds.

The "Canary" Island is derived from the Latin canaria, "of the dogs", referring to the numerous dogs kept by the inhabitants of the islands. The islands are not named after the bird as commonly asserted.
