The People's Republic of China uses the Renminbi, or the 'People's Money.' The basic unit is commonly called the YUAN, not the yen. The yuan can be broken up into ten jiao. Also, on the street, the yuan is commonly called 'kuai.'

There are seven different kind of bank notes: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. There is talk about the introduction of a 500 RMB note as well. There are also paper versions for 5 jiao and even 1 jiao. Coins worth 1 jiao, 5 jiao, and 1 kuai are also used.

Currently, because of pressure on the government to re-value the yuan to make international trade more fair, one United States Dollar is worth 7.75 RMB. By the end of 2007 it could be as low as 7.50 RMB.

Hope this helps. Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau all use different currencies from the mainland as well.

The currency is called "Renminbi" (people's money), but a count of money is in "yuan". However, for small amounts of money, people use the word "kuai" which literally means "pieces".
