Definitely go to a good store that specializes in running shoes. People who work in these stores should be well trained to analyze your wear patterns (bring an old pair of shoes with you with some worn tread), determine whether you need a shoe to compensate for pronation or supination (or simply a neutral shoe), and any other needs you might have for a shoe. Plan on spending a bit of time the first time you do this - at least 30 minutes.
Once you've been through the fitting you'll be advised on the type of shoe that will suit you best, and trust me when I say that you will notice a world of difference when you're in the right shoes. You'll also decrease your odds of injury.
Only go to good running stores - no offense, but the folks at your local sporting goods store may not know what they're talking about, so please go to someone knowledgeable. Your feet (and your whole body) will thank you!

k, for that kind of running walmart shoes will definitely not do! Go to your local running or sporting goods store and they will have a great selection of good running shoes. Good, trustworthy brands are Asics, Adidas, Mizuno, Brooks... I like Nike, but most people don't like Nike shoes, so you probably shouldn't use those. Determine your arch height by performing a "wet test" (hose down the bottoms of your feet and then take a walk down your driveway or another area of smooth, white concrete). Then go to roadrunnersports.com where they have pictures of the footprints and find the one that closest matches yours, and you'll find some shoes that are suited to your foot type. Good luck! Running is a great way to get and stay in tip top physical shape!

Not old ones. Shoes are a very individual choice...I'd go with fit over fashion. But it sounds like you're putting 30-40 miles a week in. I started replacing my shoes every 400 miles at the advice of a fellow runner and my knee & ankle pain went away. Use the shoe guide below for some tips on chossing the right shoe...but make sure you don't wear them beyond their usefullness. Best of luck!

I ran track since i was 13. (i'm 23) ive got 3 college records. and from my experience trying every type of sneaker including, nike, adidas, reebok and even crappy spaldings from WALMART (horrible) ive found that the cost is worth it and the best are New Balance and asics. New balance can be afforable ordering from eastbay.com. They also sell them in Kohls... i got a nice pair of new balance there recently for only $35. remember every few months you should get a new pair. I think 3 pairs a year works well...a new pair about every four months. and walk around the mall and work or school for a week or two before exercizing in them to just break them in a little bit. Good luck!

You should be wearing a shoe that fit's your running style.
Depending on how much you weigh
Depending on how you run
Are you a pronator/ over pronator/ neutral
You should not be wearing shoes from Walmart.
If you are getting a little more serious about your running.
You need to invest a little more money. Try to find a running store in your town or a sports store. Don't spen more then $70.00

Walmart jogging shooes?
Get yourself to an experienced running shoe store and buy some shoes that fit your feet and are up to the task.
If you can't find a "runners world" or "runners roost", at least get to ***** or a Foot Locker.

you're going to hurt yourself in those shoes!
go to a store that specializes in running shoes, and tell them what kind of running/walking you do. they can recommend a shoe that works for you. They dont have to be pricey either, you can get decent walking shoes for under $50.

Go to a Sporting Goods store; they will look at your foot and see if you need cushion, stability, or motion control shoes. Let them fit you in a pair of shoes. If you have a high arch you need cushion, if average you need stability, if you have a flat foot you need motion control.
