i've been vegetarian all my life (i'm 25 now) and have always been very healthy, I also eat seafood. I think people make the mistake of thinking things are missing from a vgetraian diet, but all it means is that it perhaps it has to be planned a little more carefully. For instance it is hard to get fat on a vege diet ( no meat pizzas and burger etc) and there is as much protein in soya as there is in most meats. I beleive a balanced vege diet is far healthier than an average meat eaters diet. Can it really be advised to eat red meat, which can stay in your colon for up to seven years? is this not our body telling us its no good for us?

Yes you can get all the dietary needs from a vegetarian diet. But just like the rest of the diets out there you can also lack essentials too. You just have to know how to eat right and combine the right foods to get essentials into your diet, and how to vary your protein intake so you dont get bored with your food. There is a greater percent of meat-eaters in the world that are malnurished than there are vegetarians. Too many meat-eaters think if they eat meat all their nutritional needs will be taken care of.
Ps: I eat meat, but I understand nutrition.

Well, ALMOST ALL. But you will require some animal proteins. Man is not basically a carnivorous ( meat eating) species. The humans are basically frugivorous ( fruit and nuts- eating). But one should not be fanatical about it. Take SOME animal foods such as yogurt ( milk curds ), milk, butter, eggs, and very very occasionally take some fish, just to complement your vegetarian diet. BE a vegetarian and not a fanatical vegan. Take plenty of fruits and nuts. AND occasinally take a vitamins plus minerals pill.
With these , you will be all right. Of course do undertake some physical activity. Good Luck!

I am a meat eater, but I beg to differ with the people who say you NEED animal protein; this is simply not so... Many plants offer exceptional proteins, which are much more digestable, and also high in EFA's ( essential fatty acids). Hemp is one of the best forms of protein out there, and includes high amount of OMega 3, 6 and 9, as well as a host of other good for you yummies!

No. It does not.
We as human beings are omnivores and meat is essential for a healthy diet.
It possible to fulfill your dietary needs without meat, but it is very difficult and very few vegetarians are successful at it. They my say that they are, but they are wrong.
Vegetarians also report much more digestive trouble and tend to be sick more often.
Compare a group of people who eat a balanced diet with a group of vegetarians. You decide for yourself which group seems healthier.

Yes. We weren't always meat eaters. There are entire populations today that are vegetarians - and they have fewer health problems that meat eating populations do.
