Me and my wife are thinking of opening one while she is in school to get a degree in photography to help pay for school costs. It would just be simple portraits. We live in washington state if that matters.

No. Here's what you need:
a. A good camera with a decent supply of lenses
b. Plenty of hours perfecting your shots
c. Good service

But, if you want to perfect your shots faster, i'm sure there are schools or centers willing to give you a short course.

Good luck!

No you do not need . You only need big amount of money because DSLR s are really expensive and you need to hire a place to put your machines inside
I think it would be a great idea to open a studio to finance your expenses . And your wife s education is also about photography
So do not worry .At first you may face some problems but I think you can achieve it . I was working as a photographer at 17 .I was interested in photography and the studio which I was working for really liked my pictures and wanted me to continue my job . I did it for one year . It really helped me to finance my book and daily food etc costs .And I was receiving some money which was little amount compared to that I was earning and completed one year . And then I gave up doing it because I had no time to do cause of my lectures in university

A business degree would be more helpful if your studio is to be successful.

Many good photographers fail in the business world, and many mediocre photographers succeed. So take a couple (at least) of business classes, then try opening your studio.

Good luck to you!

A good place to start would be working for a portrait photography chain who has shops set up in malls. Even smaller towns have some of these and some are in Walmart stores. What you get in addition to your pay is EXPERIENCE in public portraiture.

No. In fact, a degree in photography is quite useless compared to real-world experience behind the camera. I attained my degree in visual arts six years ago, and only by using my camera and dealing with clients have I truly learned what the business is all about.

Book smarts mean little. It's real life that truly marks where the rubber meets the road!

No, you don't need a degree in anything to open your own business. Just good advertising and business practices.

Of course not. But some people may be more likely to do business with you if you did.
