is it allowed in the other services? just want to know the purpose of it

because its no longer about you, its about your squad. You are no longer an individual and must stop thinking as one, you are now apart of a team, and your dedication to that team determines the safety of that team.

Esprit de corps, my friend. Also, it helps generate more of a feeling of egalitarianism.

The US Navy doesn't do it, very often, so it's primarily a Marine thing. Hoowah!

I never experienced this in the air force. Must be a marine thing.
