In Western Christianity, Lent is the period (or season) from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. In Eastern Christianity, the period before Easter is known as Great Lent to distinguish it from the Winter Lent, or Advent (known in Greek as the "Great Fast" and "Nativity Fast", respectively). This article tends to discuss Lent as understood and practiced in Western Christianity.
Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, roughly corresponding to early spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Ash Wednesday, which may fall anywhere between February 4 and March 10, occurs forty-six days before Easter, but Lent is nevertheless considered to be forty days long, due to the fact that Sundays in this season are not counted among the days of Lent. The traditional reason for this is that fasting was considered inappropriate on Sunday, the day commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus.

Lent is like a spiritual gym. It is a time to get in shape spiritually by examining your life and working on those areas which need to improve. Fasting, not eating between meals takes place on Ash Wed, and Good Friday but is encouraged when ever possible. Abstinence, not eating meat is practiced on Ash Wed. and all the Fridays of Lent. This is a communal way of doing penance for sin. Some people also use this time of their lives to give up things like smoking or candy or coffee, as a way of doing penance for sins.

Lent is a forty day period before Easter, which starts on Ash Wednesday.
In the Catholic church Lent ends at sundown on 5th April (Holy Thursday) with the beginning of the Mass of the Lords supper.
Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance,it is a season for reflection and taking stock of our lives and to challenge ourselves to imitate Christ more.
It has been since very early times used as a preparatory time for Easter when Christians rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for Baptism.
By observing the forty days of Lent, the Christian imitates Jesus`s withdrawel into the wilderness in preparation for his mission.
