do guests that decide to bring a gift usually choose things from the registry, or do they pick out their own gift for the most part? im asking because i'm a week and a half away from my wedding and you know how when its close to time you're supposed to check the registry to make sure there is still enough variety left? (please no speeches because yes i know bringing a gift isn't mandatory, so please no speeches about how i shouldnt think about the gift, thats not the point in my question) well when i checked mine, only the 3 gifts that already came to my house (no i didnt open them) have been purchased. im NOT saying i expect gifts. all i want to know is, do the majority of guest that DO give gifts pick from the registry? or do they pick out their own thing? is wedding gift shopping a very last minute thing for most people? i havent been to many weddings, let alone been married, so im just curious.

Wow...I know I am a last-minute shopper. As in, the day before the wedding. I will say, usually by the time I go the registry is useless, everything is gone. But for the few weddings that I went shopping for early, it was still more than 3 items gone.
Most often, I give a gift for the shower and money for the wedding. The way I figure it, the shower is for gifts, so the couple can get what they need. The wedding they can use the money on their honeymoon, or if they want to get something they need...it's up to them.
Most places you register will hold the registry open after the wedding, or you and your new husband can go and buy everything on your list at a discount.
As far as speeches go about checking your registry....everything I've read and done as far as registering (at three different stores) says you MUST check it at least two weeks before the date, to make sure there is still a selection to choose from, so you're doing the right thing!

Well Registery are really for the shower... most people just give cash for the wedding. I personally alway use the registery, it's easy and fast. If for some reason I can't or the item is not in stock then I'll just get a gift card to that store. But all of my friend and family use the registery. The key is to have a different range of stuff on there. Like one girl I know wonder why she didn't get her $200 a place setting china..... Duh.. cause most people spend about $50 on a shower gift.... and who going to buy 12 plates at $200 a pop?? Just have a lot of different stuff and price ranges on there. You can have a few big items too!!
And yes, keep checking your registery, don't tell anyone your doing it but sometimes the store makes mistakes. Like someone bought me something and I never got it- so I called the store to check and I was correct!! It was suppose to be shipped to me and wasn't. Also I got a george forman grill that I didn't ask for and I called the store- and It was suppose to be a roaster pan so I had to take it back to the store for an exchange. Store make mistakes so it's good to keep an eye out.

Congratulations and good luck! I like to use a registry, but it depends on what is on the registry that is in my price range. If I can only purchase 1 plate, then I don't use the registry. I would give cash before I would put 1 plate in a box and give as a gift. I do also give cash if it is a couple just starting out, since it's easier for them to purchase what they need that they may not have received as gifts.

My brother got a baby and used a registry and got most of the gifts that were found on there. So yes people actually do use it and find it easier because without it they have no clue what to buy.

We had this same problem, turns out most of the guests to the wedding gave money or just didn't know how to use the registry and didn't have anything marked as fulfilled.

Its a personal choice thing some people can not afford the dearer items suggested by a registry and buy their own brands after checking what you have professed a need for.

I gift-shop based on my knowledge of the couple.
If I know them, and they are well-off, I choose my own gift.
If I know them and they're just starting out, I use the registry because those are things they need.
If I don't know them, I use the registry because I don't know what they like.

I always buy something off of the registry for weddings. If there is time, I have it shipped. If I procrastinated, I just bring it to the wedding.

depends on who your friends and family are I guess; if your registry includes things like expensive dishes and the like only some people are going to give you those and that will be on the list; some people look at the list then go to WalMart.....for some people it is a last minute ordeal; for some people a great deal of thought goes into it

not really
first off ppl have an idea already of what they want to get you
some ppl have favorite stores to shop from yours just may not be theirs
also some ppl dont think inside the box they will come with some real doozies
fun gifts but doozies
and alot of ppl just give $$$$$
that way they dont have to worry about what to get you if you already have it yadda yadda yadda
this is mostly older ppl who dont use comps or even know about registries
