ok.....i need your opinion about the following statement....if you agree or disagree, please explain....

"A doctor who caused an iatrogenic illness to his/her patient should/must be taken to court".

iatrogenic illness: is an illness resulting from the activity of a physician in the course of treating the patient

I can't say that I completely agree with this. It depends on the severity of the illness. As I may agree that the patient does have a right to report the doctor to the proper "powers that be," I don't believe in frivolous law suits. We live in a litigious society and lawsuits cost all of us. Furthermore, doctors are human and make mistakes on the job just like the rest of us. Granted, not all of us have human lives on our hands, but if the illness is treatable and did not result in an untimely death, then, no, I don't agree with this statement.

all iatrogenic illnesses are not the physician's fault. If there is a cross- infection from another patient, or an infection acquired from some apparatus which has not been sterilized properly, it is not directly the fault of the physician. The same goes for an adverse drug reaction. Sometimes, wrong diagnoses, wrong lab. reports and other mistakes also occur. This is human error, and no one can be taken to court for it.
