The condition known as split ends, technically known as trichoptilosis, occurs when the hair has been stressed too much and the stress frays the ends of the hairstrand. Common causes of trichoptilosis include damage from heat styling, bleaching, coloring, and use of inferior haircare products. Although some products claim to repair split ends, this just isn't true. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off.
Hair, on average, grows up to 1/2 inch per month, and there aren't many things a person can do to increase that number. However, there are things you can do to ensure steady hair growth. Frequent trimming is the most important. Get the ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks to avoid getting split ends, which can halt hair growth. Nutrition is also important. A lack of nutrients can slow down hair growth. Taking a multi-vitamin supplement may help your hair grow faster. Adequate sleep helps as well, since sleep helps regulate hormone levels.

I use all of Profectiv's hair care products and Wild Growth Hair Oil. I also take the Hair, Nails, and Skin pills from GNC. I make sure to get my hair trimmed once a month. And I always sleep in a silk scarf every night. U should really look into the Profectiv line. They have a products espeically for split ends. I use it every day and night. Being here in the desert, my hair can dry out very easily and quickly. Profectiv keeps it norished and moisturized. With time, u will see the vast improvement. And it won't take as long a u think.

Here comes the science bit!
Hair grows in stages - anagen (the growing phase), catagen (the intermediate phase - resting) and telogen (the shedding phase). Very roughly speaking:
anagen 1000 days (or more)
catagen 10 days
telogen 100 days
If you feel your hair is taking a long time to grow it is maybe in its resting or shedding stage.
The length that your hairs grows is also down to age and genetics. It is very difficult for men to grow their hair longer than shoulder length - although in some cultures hair is never cut from birth or childhood and can grow very long indeed.
I guess the answer is have patience. Keep your hair in good condition by having it trimmed regularly as split ends will damage the hair shaft and you will have to have it cut to get rid of the damage.

You have to trim your hair as it may have split ends so by getting rid of the split ends it starts to grow again. Like it grows 5 inches, you trim 1 inch off, and let it grow a few more inches. It still gets longer.

vigorous rubbing of the scalp with fingers after washing the hair with cold water is one of the most effective among the several home remedies for the prevention and treatment of hair loss. The scalp should be rubbed vigorously till it starts to tingle with the heat. It will activate the sebaceous glands and energise the circulation of blood in the affected area, making the hair grow healthy.
The healthy condition of the hair depends, to a very large extent, on the intake of sufficient amounts of essential nutrients in the daily diet. Persons with a tendency to lose hair should take a well-balanced and correct diet, made up of foods which, in combination, should supply all the essential nutrients. It has been found that a diet which contains liberal quantities of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits would provide adequate amounts of all the essential nutrients. Each food group should roughly form the bulk of one of the three principal meals. These foods should, however, be supplemented with certain special foods such as milk, vegetable oils, honey, wheat germ, yeast and liver.

It's the trimming that's stopping it.
Hair grows slowly and your cutting that little bit of hard fought growth of every couple of months.
Stop trimming and you'll see the difference in 6 months.
