it means that it's ok, you don't mind. And like when someone is coming to your home it's the same really, it just means it's alright, don't worry about it.

The same reason that we say "hello" when we answer the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell originally wanted the term to be "haloa" but was overruled by Edison or vice versa. I forgot the whole story. It's interesting why customers like this came about, usually it's from one political figure.

The etymology has lead to the phase: You are welcome as a guest. A guest would say thank you for entertaining my presence. The host would say you are welcome. another example would be, thank you for dinner, the response is you are welcome. The meaning "entertainment or public reception as a greeting" is recorded from 1530.

We thank people for what ever gesture they have done. And then they say welcome because they want to thank us for thanking them in the first place. Its all about being polite to people who are polite.

That is a very good question. "Welcome" is commonly used as a greeting; as in "Welcome to my home"; or it is also used like this "You are welcome to stay as long as you can"; So saying "Your welcome" when we are thanked just doesn't make sense. Just another crazy English language example.
