It forms what is often known as the Australian Alps and was formed by an uplift of the earth's surface, much like the European Alps and the Himalayas. Subsequent erosion has removed much of the fold geomorphology. Its nothing like the Indonesian Archipelago mountains which are all the result of volcanic eruption.
