It seems to be fat cat day around here!
In the interests of my laziness, my answer will be somewhat terse, and I'm going to rely on you to read my links. So here goes.
Many vets don't know squat about cat nutrition. Surprising but true. Feeding your cat dry food isn't going to help them lose weight.
Switch your cat to canned food - he or she will be able to eat more and will still lose weight.
I've boned up on cat nutrition because I have a little porker myself.
As for the time period, I no longer have the link about it, but in a nutshell, cats must lose weight slowly. Very slowly. In cases of very fat cats, as little as 1 pound per month. That's because their livers can't handle it. It's called fatty liver or hepatic lipidosis or something like that.
Found some info on that - it's in one of the links below: "A fifteen-pound cat should not lose more than half a pound in four weeks. (Remember the Hepatic Lipidosis problem!)"

I have a cat who is suppose to weight 10 pounds he weighs 19 instead. I've also tried the science diet weight control and found he ate more of that then he did with regular food.I have found the purina one that is made with yogurt i think the lamb and rice meal does alot better and he eats alot less. Also indoor cats seem to get lazy with no exercize.I would suggest trying to get your kitty to play a little each day. If nothing else works take him back to the vet. Then again depending on your cats breed he may not be overweight . Maine coons are realy big cats by nature.

Is she getting any exercize along with her diet food? A laser pointer and/or a feather on a stick really seem to get the cats attention and get them moving a little. It takes more than just low fat food to lose weight. I worked for a shelter a while back and we got this 28 pound calico in. She couldnt even walk when she got to us. Gradually, she lost the weight. We would bribe her to exercise by holding a treat out in front of her and have her chase us. In a few months she was down to 20 pounds and ready for adoption. Good luck!!

You could try getting your cat a laser toy if you never tried it. Mine go nuts over it and it's the only way I have actually been able to exercise them. I have a cat that is a little on the tubby side too. When he started to get to the point where he could only just barely squeeze through the cat door to the back porch where his litter box is, I knew it was time for action - literally I started exercising him with the laser toy two or three times a day for about five minute increments. He loves it and will often beg me to play with him. It's the best way to get a cat moving going around the house with it and up and down the stairs (if you have them) over and over.without exahausting yourself in the meanwhile and your cat will love you for it. Oh, and if you do go this route and your cat is out of shape, you might have to do only a couple minute increments at a time to start with or it might be too much for him.

How much exercise is your cat getting? Just like people, cats need exercise too. Try finding a toy she likes, like a laser she can chase, one of those circular tubes with the ball in it that the cat can push around, a cat "fishing pole" with a toy on the end, or a battery operated mouse. There are cheaper options as well, my cat enjoys a ball of fluff on a sting the most. I get her to chase it in circles until she is breathing hard, and only wants to watch it, and not chase it.
If you think that your cat gets plenty of exercise, then a visit to the vet would most definitely be in order.

Does she get enough exercise? Please do not give her any "people food". We love our babies & think a little people food treat won't hurt but it messes up her metabolism. I adopted a cat from the shelter that had been a lap cat for an elderly lady. She had to give her up because she was unable to bend over to feed & care for her. "Lindy" weighed 15lb. In 2 months with play time & limited food she was at her normal weight. Good luck & thank for saving another cat's life from the shelter. That is all I've gotten in years plus being a foster mom until I find loving homes. Please tell all your cat loving friends to spay & neuter to help reduce the stray population

You need to exercise them as well. What has happened is that the cat is burning carbohydrates because its in starvation mode (well only slightly) and burning off any energy is gets quickly. This is the body's way of keeping the fat for a time when there is no food.
By exercising the cat with running, jumping ect you force your cat to turn to its fat stores for energy.
Also check that no one else is feeding it xD

i might shop him indoors to be sure that he isn't any longer getting the different nutrients, the two from neighbours or from looking. Plus, he's a lot safer indoors far off from predators, vehicles and poisons. i do no longer know in case you have already besides the incontrovertible fact that it could be a sturdy concept to get him assessed by utilising a vet. they could positioned him on a supervised weight-help plan with veterinary weight loss software meals. That way you could shop music of his progression and alter parts as mandatory. you additionally can want to attempt distinctive weight loss software meals while you're no longer getting outcomes, some cats do greater advantageous on distinctive formulation. To get him to exercising greater attempt energetic video games like laser regulations and feathers on the top of a stick. those constantly get my cats shifting.
