Because songs are rhyming, predictable, monotonous, unoriginal and played ad nauseam. Retaining book facts requires a basic level of intelligence, and the whole idea is it's something you didn't already know, and thus is harder to remember.

I played in a band for a number of years and i really never thought about it.... but if I had to guess I think that the song would be a lot shorter with condensed meaning about the subject line than a story would be or a book!!

Your subconscious mind (unihipili in Hawai'ian vernacular) wants to remember the song because it is interesting and exciting.
The facts in a vool are dry and lifeless; and the unihipili lookses interest very quickly.

memorizing anything that intersts you is easy. and lyrics, novels, stories, some times history (which are aslo facts) are entertaning. they get hacked in your mind, since you wnjoy 'em.
