We used to crack up when people would whisper 'pit bull' and cross the street when we were walking our Pug/Chihuahua mix or our Boston terrier.
Media tells so many people how to and what to think..it is called TV Brain..I am afraid it is a disease with out a cure.

I like it when people rush to the side of the street for my pit. Why?
Because they see the ultimate breed strolling down the street,my pit is totally gentle but I dont mind the fear in peoples eyes. You cant breed anger into dogs its all in the owners, thats like saying if I bred with a mass murderer that my child will be one........And if people would actually look up what Cambridge did it shows the pitbull as having the best temperment even above the almighty labrador. That was a 2005 study........even the dog whisperers favorite breed is the pitbull.

I'm afraid that's something you're just going to have to live with.
Keep your chin up.And try to work with your dog in the back yard if possible where the neighbor can't see.
If it is not possible then the next time he approaches you stay calm and tell him your dog is a happy, healthy lovable dog who would'nt hurt a fly and you're giving him all the exercise and training you can to keep him that way.If you wanted him to be mean you'd have him on a chain or cooped up in the house with nothing to do but grow more and more resentful that he's stuck in prison for the crime of being a dog. You've noted his concerns over the dog and would appreciate it if he'd go away now and not bother you or your dog anymore.
People in my neighborhood were terrified of my neighbors pitbull puppy. She had never owned a dog before and as a new mother had little time to deal with a dog as well as work all day.The pup escaped every chance he could and came straight here to play with my gsds.He was such a character you could'nt help but fall in love with the little guy. When she kicked her low-life boyfriend out she was evan more frazzled and the dog ended up chained outside for sometimes 12 hrs. a day and it broke my heart. So I started going and getting him almost daily to play here.By this time the dog was over 2 yrs old and he was almost the perfect gentleman for me.But at least once daily all 3 boys would test my patience and authority as pack leader. When play would start to get too rough I'd step in the middle and seperate them all and make the aggressor sit down long enough to calm down.At times I'd have all 3 lined up sitting in front of me while I scolded them all and people stopped their cars on the street out front to watch.I've had many of my neighbors comment on how amazed they were that this dog was so well mannered and easy to work with and they hoped I did'nt mind them watching but they got a big kick out of watching me-a grandma-treating these dogs that they knew could rip my heart out if they wanted to treat them all like bad kids and the dogs act as tho they were just that.I'd managed to ease all their fears by just letting the dog play and making him mind!
So keep on doing what you're doing.Don't miss any opportunity to tell anyone who will listen how truly loveable these dogs are if all their needs are met.But remember that actions speak louder than words. What people see is what they'll remember.
My neighbor re-homed her pit last summer.I really miss the little guy.And I still have people in the neighborhood stop to ask where my other kid is.

Pit Bulls have a bad rep I'm afraid. There have been many problems with the dogs attacking people and other animals. This comes from breeding extra aggression into them for dog fighting and guard dogs. And from incorrect training. I have known many who were just big ol' lovable lushes. The media is responsible for the negative attention. Don't blame your neighbor too much. He's just afraid. Try to talk to him nicely and tell him you understand he's afraid. Tell him your dog is well trained and that you don't allow him to have aggressive behavior. Also promise him that your dog will never run loose.

The same thing happens to me. What I did was get me a toy chihuahua and have him prance around my babies and people want to touch my toy chi and they have to get around my pits because he wont leave their side. Also I have introduced my dogs to many different people. I also have a mut that I keep a muzzle on because of his severe agression towards other people. I walk him with my pit and people ask me why muzzle the fury cute cuddly mut and not the viscious looking pit. And I tie my two dogs up and I tell them... I am not reliable but if you want it is your choice... my mut bites... you choose which dog you would like to pet. And it never fails they go towards my mut. And he makes whatever noise he can with the muzzle on. And I tell people dont judge a book by its cover. Yea my girl looks mean but doesnt mean she is. I just try and educate people about my dogs. My grandma was the same way until I introduced my dog HunnyBunny to her. Maybe you should try doing that. Talk to your neighbor and then introduce your loving pit bull to him. It usually works for me. Good Luck!! Hug ur pit bull!!

Because people see all the reports on tv about pitts and they are scared. An most of the time anything bigger than a chiuaua people are terrified of. I have the same problem but i have an alaskan husky . Looks like a grey wolf and people won't come 5 feet near him. I do agree their are some breeds people are affraid of but you know what it how you raise the dog. If you train it to kill it will kill if you treat it like a family member instead of an object chances are your dog will be a great companion.People are so judgemental with big dogs. But you know what my neighbors miniture schnauzer is more vicious than my dog.

Because people see what's on TV. We have a guy living in my apartment building and people will do the same damn thing. I really don't care. I treat them like any other dog. I have a big dog and I'm a little person and people will avoid me cause they think I either cant hold him back or he will attack them... If i didn't feel comfortable taking him out I wouldn't

ya the other day i was out walking my dog in my back yard on his tie out. because there was like two foot of snow and my dog loves the snow, specially the drifts that are like 4 foot deep. well the neighbors dog came up and my dog wanted to play with him so i let him.well my other neighbor came running out of the house like my dog was beating up the other one or something. they where just playing but after he saw me standing there petting both dogs he walked back inside. my dog is a blk chow / am staff cross. he looks mean but the biggesst baby of them all. we have three neices 5, 12, & 12 the five year old just lays all over my dog and he just loves it. i dont get what is up with these people these days.

if you think you got it bad try walking a 220lb english mastiff down the street.it's pretty nice though when i walk him we have the street to ourself.when people see us coming they run and get their dogs in the house as fast as they can.theres even a guy 3 houses down from us with 2 rotts and he gets them inside as quick as he can.all the kids run to greet him while the parents run away from him.when we go to the park to walk him all the people with dogs will either turn around or they will get way off the path until we pass.he is aggressive when we are at home but when he is on his walk he's just a big baby.
